Shift Work: Three Shift Jobs

Shift work is ideal for the student looking for his or her first job, the recently laid off, or for the person who needs some side money. While different scheduling formats for shift work have been introduced around the world, 3 shift jobs are still the norm, not the exception.

If you have never worked 3 shift jobs before, you may not know what to expect or which shift you would prefer. I have worked first shift in an office along with swing and graveyard shifts at a convenience store while I was in college. Therefore, I have the experience to warn you of the advantages and disadvantages of 3 shift jobs.

In 3 shift jobs, there is a morning shift, a swing shift, and a graveyard shift. Each shift has their distinct advantages for scholastic, family, and personal reasons.

The morning shift normally begins from 5A.M. to 9A.M. It normally concludes from 1P.M. to 5P.M.

With morning shift work, you begin the day getting your work out of the way. You will have the rest of the day to do what you please. You will have a better opportunity to spend time with your children when they are out of school. As the preference for many people is to work morning shift, you will have a better opportunity to hang out with friends. You should also be able to go to bed at a respectable time each evening.

One problem with morning shift work during 3 shift jobs can include tardiness. From schooldays, everyone knows how hard it is to wake up early in the morning. Getting scared senseless by your alarm clock to start each day does not get it off to a good start. If you work in customer service, starting your day bombarded with customers can be gruesome, also. Morning shift work can often be busy during the entire shift.

The swing shift normally begins from 12P.M. to 4P.M. It normally concludes from 8P.M. to 12A.M.

With swing shift work, you have the opportunity to sleep in. Many people feel more energized during this part of the day, and they can get more done. By the conclusion of a swing shift, customers are getting ready for bed, so the final hours are more relaxed then during morning shift work.

A problem with swing shift work is dealing with the rush-hour customers. 4P.M. to 6P.M. can be brutal with the amount of customers and aggravated people just getting off from work that need to vent. Another issue is if you start swing shift work later, you may be going to bed rather late, interrupting your circadian rhythm. It is difficult to maintain a life with your children when you’re doing shift work when they are not at school. It may be difficult to hangout with your friends, also.

The graveyard shift normally begins from 10P.M. to 2A.M. It normally concludes from 6A.M. to 10A.M.

During the final shift on a 3 shift job, you may do nothing. For the person that wants simplicity and does not want to risk mistakes, they may love the idea of graveyard shift work. You may be asked to watch over things, clean up, and your duties are finished. Basically, stay awake and say cheese for the security camera!

Since graveyard shifts work is not popular, employers may offer you more money. More money and the entire day to yourself sounds intriguing, does it not?

What is the biggest problem with graveyard shift work? You do nothing. You ever try doing nothing and stay up all night? Talk about wishing away your life. In the final hour when you are barely hanging on, that is the hour when you need to buckle down and get things ready for the morning shift to arrive. In contrast, you may be assigned much physical labor activity during this shift. Physical labor when your sleep walking? Yikes!

Third shift work can also be hazardous. The people out during this time are often the people you do not want to make contact with. My second to last day working at a convenience store was on a graveyard shift where a customer I was serving got carjacked. Cops and chaos when one is half asleep in the A.M is not quite awesome; just adventurous.

Have I mentioned disrupting your circadian rhythm to the point of sleeping disorders or even cancer? It is even worse if you intertwine between day and nights shift in the same week.

Which was my favorite shift in 3 shift jobs? Let’s just say there is a reason everyone wants a nine-to-five job. It is not too early in the morning, yet you have the remainder of the day to live your life and time to spend with family and friends.
